Recent Weather Devastates South Carolina

Wed be hard pressed to find anyone that wasnt aware of the devastating turn of events that recently struck South Carolina due to weather. It would seem that Mother Nature herself has the state in her crosshairs as the rainfall amounts continue to exceed earlier records."The flooding is unprecedented and historical," said Dr. Marshall Shepherd, a meteorologist and director of the atmospheric sciences program at the University of Georgia[caption id="attachment_377" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Photo Credit: The Sun News Photo Credit: The Sun News[/caption]Inland, as well, the catastrophic flooding continues. Many areas around the state capitol of Columbia are still executing rescue efforts. With the ground thoroughly saturated, additional rain just adds insult to injury as trees topple over and landscapes wash away. Swift-water rescue teams continue to pluck hundreds of residents from stranded cars and flooded homes all over the state.[caption id="attachment_378" align="aligncenter" width="580"]Photo Credit: The Sun News Photo Credit: The Sun News[/caption]This past weekend the rain continued here in Myrtle Beach with several roads flooding out in the area. We can't just move the water out," said Haley at a news conference.Where the recent storm brought 24-hour rainfall totals estimated to occur once per 1,000 years in a few places, rainfall amounts this past weekend were more ordinary by South Carolina standards. Total daily rainfall amounts on Saturday averaged between 1-2 inches in most of the flood-ravaged areas. However, a few locations saw somewhat higher amounts, due to more robust thunderstorms that developed.Only a few lingering light showers remained near the immediate coast on Sunday.
