In 1993 a group of parents and community leaders realized that inexpensive, fun, and educational activities for children preschool to twelve years old and their families were missing in the community and opened a children’s
museum in 1,200 square feet of mall space. Over the last decade, the Museum, which was the first operational children’s museum in the state of South Carolina, has become a dominant informal-education force in the region. The Museum serves two distinct and diverse populations, local and regional residents and a booming tourist population comprised of South Carolinians, out of state residents, and emerging international visitors. The current museum‘s exhibits are original designs and have been designed and built in house in collaboration with local businesses and industries. All exhibits and programs promote an enriching, self-discovering learning experience. The Museum is committed to providing developmentally appropriate exhibits and programs that are grade specific, and support state and national education standards.

The current Museum encompasses 7,900 square feet of space with 13 permanent exhibits and traveling
exhibits, while providing field trips, educational outreach programs, a preschool literacy program called “Toddler
Tuesday” and teacher training. Through quality programming, the Museum has established a stronghold in the
educational community providing innovative informal learning opportunities, which in turn has challenged Museum
staff to keep pace with increased visitation and outreach demand.
